Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged members of the party to draw lessons from past experiences and remain committed to rebuilding a stronger and more united political organisation ahead of the 2028 general election.
Speaking at the NPP National Delegates Conference at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, Dr Bawumia commended delegates for their service to the party and reminded aspirants seeking national executive positions that their responsibility to the NPP would extend beyond the outcome of the elections. The conference brought together more than 7,000 delegates to consider constitutional amendments and elect new national officers to steer the party’s affairs.
Dr Bawumia stressed the need for the party’s leadership to reconnect with the grassroots and reach out to members who may have become disillusioned or inactive. He said the NPP’s previous electoral experiences should guide its reorganisation, adding that unity, discipline and internal cohesion would be crucial as the party prepares for the next general election. His remarks came as the NPP continues a broader rebuilding process following its 2024 electoral defeat and subsequent internal reforms.
The former Vice-President also used his address to criticise aspects of the current government’s performance, raising concerns about the cost of living, transportation expenses and the implementation of programmes such as the 24-hour economy and school feeding. He maintained that the NPP, as the main opposition party, has a duty to scrutinise government programmes and demand accountability.
Dr Bawumia has previously urged NPP parliamentarians to subject government policies to detailed scrutiny, including their budgets, implementation plans and measurable outcomes.
He concluded by calling on party members to remain focused on rebuilding public confidence and strengthening the NPP’s structures as it prepares for the 2028 elections.
